LIVING THE LAB LIFE
A BLOG FOR ASCLS REGION V
Last month I had the pleasure of attending this year's Clinical Laboratory Collaborative, hosted at the Earl Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center, MN. For those of you who have never attended the CLC, I highly recommend you do attend sometime in your lab career. This event is unique in that is not solely an ASCLS event, but rather a collaborative effort of multiple laboratory professional organizations. This year's CLC brought together the efforts of ASCLS-MN, ASCP, CLMA-MN, MIMA, AACC-Midwest Section, AMT, MnABB, AGT, and MN AMT... and all of those acronyms add up to a diversified learning and networking opportunity.
Many unique topics were presented at this year's CLC, including emergency preparedness, newborn screening, discussion of the gut biome and its potential application in personalized medicine, the latest in blood substitutes, and much more. Additionally, this year's event featured a new offering: half-day long workshops. Rather than the normal one hour long talks that dominate most continuing education events, these workshops spanned about three hours and went far more in-depth into their respective topics. I personally thought this was a great addition to the CLC program and hope to see it again in the future.
Curious minds can visit the ASCLS-MN website for presentations handouts from most of the speakers-see the link below.
Tuesday was Student Day, and we had well over one-hundred students from local MLS/MLT programs in attendance. For me, this day is the most fun. It is enjoyable to watch students navigate their way through the event. So many of the best questions are asked by student attendees, things that I never would have even thought about; the fresh perspective they bring really enhances the experience for us all.
It is always a pleasure to attend this event. I learned some new information, helped raise money for scholarships and the PAC, and networked with some of my fellow laboratory professionals. Plus the food was good.
I hope to see all of you there next year!
